“We never have to turn a customer away”

This Sydney beachside café has been riding high since installing a reliable payments system that accepts all cards – and earns Qantas Points along the way.

Famous for its açai bowls served in coconut shells and excellent coffee, Tamarama Kiosk has views across one of Sydney’s most spectacular beaches. “We’re in the middle of the Bondi to Bronte Walk, which is on every tourist’s bucket list,” says Jodi Boterhoek (above), who runs the kiosk with husband Alan Lewis. “In the 32 years I’ve been here – Al’s been here for more than 40 – our business has evolved from 100 per cent cash to pretty much 100 per cent EFTPOS.”

When they switched to Live Payments about five years ago, they were looking for an EFTPOS provider that accepted any credit or debit card or mobile wallet. “We get a lot of international travellers and many of them only have Amex, which we were previously unable to process. But Live Payments takes all cards. We never have to turn a customer away.”

The kiosk crew pride themselves on knowing the names and coffee orders of all their regulars and Boterhoek says she appreciates that Live Payments also makes business personal, offering fast and smooth set-up and support along the way. “We have our own relationship manager. When there’s a large event, like Sculpture by the Sea, we simply call him and get a few extra machines to keep up with the crowds.”

Live Payments deposits funds into the kiosk’s bank account every business day. And since the café signed up with Live Payments as a Qantas Business Rewards member, every tap on the terminal also earns Qantas Points for the business. “We reinvest these points into travel, which is essential for staying on top of trends and drawing inspiration from other seaside venues,” says Boterhoek. “On a recent trip to Bali we got the idea to put beanbags out around the kiosk. We had some made over there and brought them back.”

At the rate Tamarama Kiosk serves coffee – as many as 1200 cups a day during peak times – the points are adding up fast in its Qantas Business Rewards Account.

They’re a valuable bonus, says Boterhoek, on top of the dedicated service she receives from the Live Payments team. “Not many big businesses run like that any more.”
