Ikeep my eyes fixed on the road, terrified of taking them off. Something pale flickers in my rear-view mirror. Strange, a moment ago there were trees bordering the road, now they’re gone.

I blink, discarding the thought. Wait, there it is again. A flash, followed by darkness, darker than the charcoal sky outside. The signpost I saw a minute ago has vanished. I put my foot down. It isn’t the night, it’s a devouring abyss, enveloping the road. I accelerate; it chases me. The tarmac, gone. It’s at the back of the car; the back seat; my seat, it’s – Short- listed entry in the UK 100-Word Story Competitio­n
