The Man Who Invented Christmas

(Drama, Biography)

-

Many of our ideas about what makes a merry Christmas (including the phrase itself) can be attributed to Charles Dickens. In 1843 a debt-ridden and dispirited Dickens used what little savings he had to selfpublish A Christmas Carol. The story of Ebenezer Scrooge revived much of the nostalgia and tradition we associate with the holiday today. The Man Who Invented Christmas takes audiences on the magical journey that ended with the creation of the popular classic novella.

In the role of a young Dickens, Dan Stevens ably conveys the vivid imagination that conjured up unforgettable characters. Christopher Plummer is perfectly cast as Scrooge, while Jonathan Pryce plays the part of Dickens’ father. Directed by Bharat Nalluri ( Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day) and based on Les Standiford’s book of the same name, this is a feel-good film for the season.
