Battle of the Sexes is the true story of the 1973 tennis match between the women’s world number-one player, Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and former men’s champion, serial hustler, and selfproclaimed chauvinist Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell). While the idea that an over-the-hill male player could defeat the top-ranking young female champion was a gimmick, King recognised that she could send a powerful message to the tennis establishment that did not value women as equal to men.

The match attracted a massive television audience worldwide and the outcome – King won – was a game changer for women’s tennis.
