Here he makes his final ‘goodbye’ from the steps of Marine One after resigning in 1974 because of the Watergate scandal. Years later he reflected on that morning: “I looked at my watch, the battery had run out, worn out, at 4 o’clock the last day I was in office. By that day, I was worn out, too.” His fellow citizens felt the same.
