(i) Paint your floors, walls and ceil­ings, says Sarah – it cre­ates a sur­pris­ing depth and will make the space seem al­most dou­ble the size it ac­tu­ally is. (ii) Choose a low-sheen paint: the slight gloss will make for some re­ally pretty lights and high­lights around the house, and it feels lovely to the touch. (iii) In­tro­duce tex­ture via printed wall­pa­per and smooth var­nishes. (iv) Use can­dles, lights and lamps to break up the dark­ness. Hang lights rather than at­tach them to ceil­ings – this is the most beau­ti­ful way to light a small space.
