BLACKBERY SMOKE FIND A LIGHT

Illuminating rock from Brit and the Smoke

BS continue to make grooving rock that’s the aural equivalent of chilling with a good bottle of Bourbon on a wooden porch at sunset. 2012’s The

Whippoorwill first put Blackberry Smoke and drummer Brit Turner on our radar here, and the fine follow-up Hold All The Roses established them as mature players sitting in a distinct groove, rhythmically and musically. Here they haven’t moved from that groove; the country-tinged ‘Run Away From It All’, bluesy ‘Flesh And Bone’ and whiskeysoaked ‘Medicate My Mind’ will please fans, while Brit’s effortless grooves are a joy. Highlight ‘Lord Strike Me Dead’, is a Skynyrd-esque slice of gloriously hooky, southern rock gospel. (CBu)
