A Sheffield Jazz Oddity

The news that this was nearly released as an Alex Turner solo album isn’t surprising after hearing it. This is sci-fi lounge music built around Turner’s knowing but dislocated train of thought to feel light years away from even its predecessor AM, let alone the band’s modern classic debut. The bravery of that is almost admirable, the left-turn from traditional guitar-driven hooks could be the biggest blindside for many. The 70s soundscapes and falsetto harmonies bed in more on repeated listens to feel less laboured, though Matt Helders’ funky grooves (one of the album’s redeeming positives) are often tied to tempos that blur. FourOutOfFive emerges as the only pop star in this galaxy. (DH) Download: ‘FourOutOfFive’ Goto: www.arcticmon
