Rhythm’n’booze from Mr Bloater and co

Matt Cowley returns with the Brit r’n’b outfit, backing Surrey-born Bloater on another album of good-time rock’n’roll. Cowley’s straight ahead rhythms and well-placed snare fills keep the party going on ‘Pills’ and while on ‘Friday Night’s Alright For Drinking’ he plays a groove so dirty you could write your name in it. ‘The Saturday Night Desperation Shuffle’ has more than a little glam-rock groove going on, but mostly it’s his heroes Levon Helm and Earl Palmer who inform Cowley’s fantastic playing here. A neat tom intro leads into a sweet shuffle on ‘Mouse Organ’, here and elsewhere on the album echoes ofThe Band are hard to miss. Bloater’s gruff voice is fantastic and when Cowley lays back into a cross-stick and tom groove for ‘She Didn’t Buy A Ticket’, we’re headed to the world’s best pub where The Limits are the house band.
