VK Drums Vkast bronze kit £17,000 www.vkdrums.com

Rhythm - - BEAT! -

When a drummer in Japan approached British drum builder Alan Van Kleef about making a seven-piece cast bronze drum kit, rather than recoil at such a monumental task, Alan jumped at the opportunity to build something utterly unique and truly special, harking back to the pioneering bronze drums of celebrated craftsman Jeff Ocheltree.

For the VK VKast bronze kit you see here, Alan had to invest thousands in new moulds for the shells and matching bronze hoops, as well as jigs for drilling the hole configuration for each hoop. All shells measure up as 5mm thick, with 45-degree edges and a slight rounded counter cut.

Shell sizes are 8"x7", 10"x8", 12"x8", 14"x14", 16"x16", 22"x14" and 14"x6½". Each one is treated to a raw finish with laser marked VK logos on all cast parts. Each drum also features stainless steel double ended tube lugs and surgical steel tubes. And the sound? Musical, clear and very loud!

This kit set the customer back 17 grand, including cases for the toms and snare, and a flight case for the bass drum, although he’ll need to hire a tech to help set up the eye-wateringly heavy tubs. We helped unbox the kit for this Rhythm photo shoot and needed a lie down after...
