The idea that each hand plays its re­spec­tive side of the kit with the hands never cross­ing, for ex­am­ple to play the hi-hat. Gary would also have his stu­dents learn to play lead­ing with ei­ther hand as they worked through his sys­tems (os­ti­natos) and melodies (read­ing pages).
