How does the thyroid gland work?

The thyroid gland is located at the top of the throat on the hard thyroid cartilage that makes up the Adam’s apple. The gland produces hormones such as thyroxine, which are passed on to the entire body. The hormones primarily control the metabolism, but also body growth and temperature.
