The Varroa mite is bees' worst enemy. The small parasite attacks the bees, which typically die within 1-3 years. The mite originated in Asia, where bees are more resistant.
A few months ago, the honey bee's relative, the bumblebee, ended up on the list of endangered species in the US, after a 87 % population reduction in only two decades.
About one third of the food sold in supermarkets is dependent on bee pollination. Without bees, we would no longer be able to enjoy favourites such as apples, coffee, and strawberries.
