"DIVORCE" PRODUCED A MOUNTAIN

The mountain consists of 1.8-billion-year-old sandstone, which was lifted by geological forces, when Africa and South America parted 180 million years ago.

The flat top is the remains of the ancient land surface, which has been preserved, because it is the hardest part of the sandstone.

The lowlands surrounding Mount Roraima consist of softer sandstone, which has been eroded by frequent, heavy rain.
