For 30 min­utes, the Apollo 8 as­tro­nauts have no ra­dio con­tact with Earth, as they pass the far side of the Moon. When they can see Earth again, they take the first colour photo of our en­tire planet – the fa­mous Earthrise pic­ture.

4 DAYS, 7 HOURS, 18 MIN­UTES:

Orion is flung around the Moon only 100 km above the sur­face and is sent on into an or­bit op­po­site of the Moon's ro­ta­tion. Orion re­mains here for seven days.
