BLOOD SUGAR LEVEL RISES IN A DIABETIC

-

The pancreas releases insulin, that carries glucose out of the blood vessels. Diabetics do not produce sufficient insulin, and so, sugar accumulates.

GENE-SPLICED BACTERIUM MEASURES BLOOD SUGAR

A new treatment splices a blood sugar-measuring gene into bacteria deep in the skin. The bacteria are in contact with blood vessels, detecting an increased blood sugar level.

BACTERIUM TAKES OVER PANCREAS' JOB

The rising blood sugar level activates another added gene in the bacterium, that can produce insulin like a pancreas. The patient's blood sugar level is kept stable.
