Family portraits reveal galaxy structure

Science Illustrated - - SPACE TELESCOPES -

The Milky Way can be divided into three general elements: a thin disc, a thick disc, and a ball-shaped cloud, the halo. Gaia’s new measurements of the brightness and motions of the stars have allowed astronomers to categorize four million stars according to their mass, age, and chemistry. The Milky Way’s new family portrait of anything from white dwarfs to red giants has been included into a Hertzprung Russell diagramme, that categorizes stars according to brightness and temperature.
