One big whale is worth US$2m

Economists from the Internatio­nal Monetary Fund have put a value on the world’s largest marine mammal. Their complex calculatio­ns show that in its lifetime, a large whale generates a value of US$2 million.

The calculatio­ns are based on the whale’s value as a subject of ecotourism plus its worth in terms of carbon dioxide storage in the animal’s huge body.
