IN MEMORY OF MR SAMAN GUNAN

On July 6, 2018, former Thai Navy Seal Sergeant Major Saman Gunan passed away while making his way out of the cave after delivering three oxygen tanks to the boys and their coach. “He volunteered to join four foreigners and one Thai diver to place air tanks along the route. The foreign divers took three hours, but he and his diving buddy took longer,” Thai Navy Captain Anand Surawan reported to Channel NewsAsia on July 12, 2018. “Seven hours had passed and they still hadn’t emerged.”

“When we learned of Saman’s death, that affected the entire team a lot, knowing that one of our team members had perished inside the cave,” Ivan adds. Though Saman wasn’t a cave diver, he was a very well-trained former Navy Seal diver, and his death made us think that if a person of his calibre could have an accident, then this could easily happen to us as well.

“However, it also made us work very, very hard, as after his death, we wanted to make sure that his sacrifice was not in vain.”

Scuba Diver AUSTRALASIA would like to honour Mr Gunan’s bravery and sacrifice. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
