Scuba Diver Australasia + Ocean Planet

FROM THE EDITOR

- Terence Koh Editor

Arthur C. Clarke once remarked, “How inappropriate to call this planet Earth, when it is quite clearly Ocean.”

Indeed, with the ocean making up 90 percent of all habitable space on our planet, we really should be calling ourselves oceanlings instead of earthlings. When I think of the ocean, my mind floats to images of majestic blue whales, colourful corals, powerful great white sharks, cute seals, playful dolphins and beautiful manta rays gliding in the clear blue expanse between continents. These marine creatures, however, can all be found within the pages of this issue, as they are all under threat. From us.

While a discussion about the health of the ocean on any given day will inevitably take you to the darker recesses of your mind, in this issue of Scuba Diver OCEAN PLANET, we’ve chosen to celebrate the beauty of just some of the animals fighting for their survival. With their breathtaking grace, resilience and resourcefulness in the face of multiple threats, these 25 ocean species represent the best of us. We hope to transmit to you their love for life through the pages of this special photo issue. In turn, we hope you pay it forward to all our fellow oceanlings across our extraordinary water planet.
