Symes joins new ministry
Local Upper House Member Jaclyn Symes has been elevated to Premier Daniel Andrews’ new ministry — pending her election to the Upper House.
Ms Symes has been announced as Victoria’s new minister for agriculture, regional development and resources in Mr Andrews’ new gender-equal cabinet.
The new ministers, including Ms Symes, will not be sworn in at Government House until all MPs are certain they have been elected to the house — with confirmation by the Victorian Electoral Commission.
If elected, Ms Symes will also join the Cabinet as Deputy Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council.
Mr Andrews said as a strong advocate for regional Victoria, Ms Symes was the perfect fit to take on the portfolios of Regional Development, Agriculture and Resources.
‘‘Fifty per cent of the cabinet are women,’’ Mr Andrews said.
‘‘There is an equality of gender in our state’s most important decision making body — I’m very proud of that.’’
Ms Symes, Adem Somyurek, Gabrielle Williams and Melissa Horne got the call up for the government’s second-term ministry last week.
