Tough going in wind and heat

Seymour Telegraph - - SPORT -

Tuesday’s twilight race was tailor-made for the scratch group as a strong south wind made the ride back to the finish tough going.

They gave the limit group, which consisted of junior rider Sam Thomson, a 16-minute start followed by the 6:30, four and two-minute groups.

The two and four-minute groups combined at the turn around and had the 6:30 in their sights with scrach one minute behind.

With 5 km to go the wind proved to be a factor as riders were slowing being caught by the main group and scratch were looming down fast.

In the closing 1 km, all had been reeled in except for young Thomson who seemed to relish the conditions and went on to win by a clear margain.

Shane Holland (2 min) led the charge home followed by Brian Inness (4 min) with Sam Fuhrmiester (scr) fourth and fastest time in 37:11.

Saturday’s race was run in 32°C heat on the Bluetop hill course which proved a tough day in the saddle.

New rider Victor Nash was the first rider to start with a 17-minute handicap.

The rest of the field were sent off with only 8 min 30 sec separating three groups.

At the top of Bluetop the five and 8:30 groups combined with scratch 1:30 further back.

Although the scratch trio of Darryl O’keefe, Christy Rilen and Michael Thomson made up the majority of the time given, the fast, mainly downhill return leg would be too much to make up.

Shayne Kirby (5 min) showed he is getting some form back as he put in a few fast turns of pace.

Ian Baker (8:30) and Bret Bender (8:30) shared the work load ensuring they wouldn’t get caught.

Nash was caught with only 3 kms to go which was a fine effort riding solo.

Kirby was never a doubt in the sprint as he held off Baker, with Bender third and Glenn Jacobs fourth.

Only 30 seconds behind was O’keefe in fifth and fastest time in 1:12:20.

Racing on Saturday starts from Burgess Signs at 2 pm.

Twilight racing continues every Tuesday from Palmworld starting at 6 pm.
