Seymour Basketball Association marks 50 years

- By Bianca Hall

Saturday will be a chance to celebrate the contribution of members of the Seymour Basketball Association, both past and present.

In 1972, the basketball association began with the sport being played on an outside court at Kings Park.

By Christmas 1985, a new two-court stadium had been built to support the sport’s growth.

Thirty-seven years on, the club is going from strength to strength, says current captain of the Country Victorian League team, Robbie Sartori.

“Our country league team has been one of, if not the most successful team in the country league in the last 20 years, with eight championships in the last 15 years,” he said.

The birthday celebration will be jam-packed with special guests to celebrate the momentous occasion for the club.

Sports journalist and commentator Wes Cusworth will be the master of ceremonies.

There will also be a sports panel featuring three special guests, including David Mundy, Gabrielle Richards and Warrick Giddy.

Mundy recently retired from a successful AFL career as a champion of the Fremantle Dockers. He played junior basketball and football in Seymour.

Seymour born and bred, Richards is a former basketball champion who represented Australia and played for Bendigo Spirit in the WNBL.

Former Melbourne Tigers NBL star and coach Giddy, the father of emerging NBA star Josh Giddy, will round out the star-studded sports panel.

The night will feature special announcements and presentations while reminiscing about Seymour basketball from over the past 50 years, with sideshows and newspaper articles and talks from life members who were there when the stadium first opened.

The event is not only for members of the association, it is a sportsman’s night where all are welcome. The event will also be child friendly.

The event is to be held at Saint Mary’s Hall. Doors open at 5.30pm for a 6pm start. The cost is $75 per head and covers a two-course meal.
