“SHE’S WAY MORE BADASS THAN I AM”

Chris Pine is Steve Trevor

-

Female empowerment is a hot topic right now. How do you see this movie reflecting that?

I think Wonder Woman is at the centre of that zeitgeist – to have a character who is so strong and physically adept, but also brings with her a great amount of compassion and love for man. She sees the hope for what human beings can be: the best parts of themselves. Whereas I play a character who’s much more of a jaded realist who’s seen the awful shit that can happen, and he tries to teach her the ways of how awful mankind can be. So we teach each other a wonderful thing.

Is Steve a supporting character in this movie? is he co-lead?

I don’t know, man. I mean, the movie’s called Wonder Woman, so it’s definitely Gal’s show, and she does a tremendous job leading it. And yeah, I’m there to basically fall in love with her, and to go on this journey that she leads to essentially save the world. There was definitely a nice diminishing of responsibilities [rather than] to have to carry something [like Star Trek]. I really have no problem with where I am on the call sheet.

Did you go back to the original comic books?

Would it have helped me really embody the character of Trevor? I don’t think so, quite honestly. Unless there was a quality in those comics they wanted to bring out, they would have put it on the page for me in the script, which is your bible.

How was it working with gal?

I thought she was great, and we all had a good time. Quite honestly, she had all this wire work and stuff, and I really like guns and jumping and getting hit and brawling. She saves me, and sometimes I save her. But she’s definitely way more badass than I am, and my little man ego had to come to terms with that fast [laughs].
