the flash Central City gets a new gang of saviours…

SEASON 4 US BROADCAST: The CW from 10 October UK BROADCAST: Sky 1 TBC

IN its third seAsoN, The FlaSh devolved from the upbeat, blue-skies superhero show it was in its first year into a dour, death-fixated hour of television. but not to worry, assures executive producer todd helbing, the skies over Central City are clearing up once more.

“Last season it got pretty dark,” admits helbing, looking back at how The Flash has evolved. “Not to slag anything we did, but i think that’s as dark as we ever want to take the show. in season one there was just a lightness and a discovery of somebody coming and discovering that they’re the Flash, and the enjoyment of that. i want to see barry enjoy being the Flash again and not having this heavy burden of his past weighing down on him.”

When season four begins, however, barry is still a prisoner in the speed Force, where he sentenced himself in season three’s finale to free Jay Garrick.

“As you saw with a couple of other speedsters, when they go in there it’s their own prison,” says helbing. “so that’s certainly going to have an effect on barry while he’s in there. When we pick up this season, it’s six months later. so the rest of the team has really stepped up to take care of everybody. Wally and Cisco are the resident superheroes in Central City, and iris is now team leader. so she’s the driving force. At the end of last season barry told her to keep running and be strong, and so she has done that. she stepped up.”
