THE tWElftH SEaSON finale found Sam and Dean losing their mother, mary, with lucifer to the alternate world, and crowley and castiel looking pretty dead. Executive producer Bobby Singer says grief will overwhelm both brothers in very different ways. “last year was about family coming together, and this season is how do you deal with a family that gets torn apart, and how each of the guys reacts to that. You throw into that that they’re dealing with the spawn of Satan. Dean has his view of how to handle the situation, which is shoot him in the face. Sam thinks that his mother was a good person so maybe it’s a nature versus nurture thing. also, where Dean has accepted in his mind that mom is gone, Sam doesn’t know that, and feels like the kid opened the rift before and maybe they can get him to do it again. It causes some head-butting between the guys.”
fellow executive producer andrew Dabbs adds, “the core question we are asking with the alternate world is what’s our world look like without Sam and Dean? Now mary is there, lucifer is there, and Sam and Dean are desperate to get the door open again. But once you introduce them to that world, how does that world change and how does our world change? In some ways, it’s building to what I would think of as an alien invasion story. It’s something we want to explore pretty heavily in the back half of the season, yet be judicious about it.”
