Perhaps the exceptional thing about Black Lightning is not that he’s the first black superhero to topline a show on the CW, but that he’s a middle-aged black man toplining a show on a channel that could be renamed Teen Sci-Fi. The series, about a retired superhero forced to come out of retirement, is based on a DC character and created by Arrowverse supremo Greg Berlanti, but for the moment, at least, all concerned are stressing it won’t have connections with Arrow, The Flash, et al. “Resurrecting him at a time in our society when a sense of hope is lacking… Black Lightning will be that hope,” says executive producer Salim Akil.
