The former Merlin star getting used to post-cyborg life in Humans

-

From sorcery to Synths as the former Merlin talks Humans.

ALMOST HUMAN

“Essentially the synthetic part of Leo’s brain was destroyed [at the end of series two] and as a result, he’s been in a coma for a year – all the technology has been taken out of his body, so he’s fully human now. He’s got all these ancient, dormant feelings of what it was like to be a human before he was made into a cyborg, and he’s trying to make sense of that.”

OBJECT OF REJECTION

“From the beginning of the series he’s sort of rejected [by his Synth family]. It’s not that he doesn’t care, but it doesn’t affect him quite as much, and that’s happening quite naturally because before his body didn’t allow him to defend against emotional things, but humans are very good at dealing with trauma and forgetting about it.”

THE EVOLUTION WILL BE TELEVISED

“Every year the writers have explored territory that hasn’t been explored previously. It’s a ruthless way of storytelling which I think is really addictive. In series one Leo was a closed-off, grumpy sort, because he didn’t trust anyone. Then he opened up a bit more in the second season. I guess, weirdly, it’s a backwards evolution – the fact that he had all this technology and he’s now been regressed down.”

WIZARDING WORLD

“Would I be interested in doing more Merlin? I had the best time doing the show for five years. But no, evolving through things – especially as an actor – is about developing and for me personally I’ve done all I can do with that character. To do any more could risk tumbling the blocks we built for five years. I enjoyed it, but I’d hate to do it again and not enjoy it.” RE

Humans is currently airing on Channel 4.
