#UNDEAD AND NOT LOVING IT

-

The Llama God, email When I was in primary school, we got creative writing tasks about once a week. I’d write stories about knights from opposing castles fighting each other. The complex, intricate plot basically involved the baddie knights attacking the goodie knights. Then the goodie knights would strike back and win. But not outright, because next time I’d write another story about the baddies attacking. Week after week this back-and-forth would go on. Until my teacher told me to write something else for a change.

Why do I bring this up? Because it seems like the writing staff of The Walking Dead have been rifling through my old schoolwork. What they’re missing, though, is the firm editing hand of my year one teacher...

Scott James, Facebook The show massively improved in quality after the mid-season break, but Rick is now at least as bad as Negan. A protagonist doesn’t have to be a white knight hero, but at this point Rick is irredeemable, and you can’t really back him or most of his crew.

A fresh idea would be to show the world being rebuilt and the challenges faced by those who maintained their hope and stuck to their morals. That’s basically what happens in the comic, but it’d be nice to see it on-screen. Maggie and Jesus would make good leads. You could have people trying to create a new future instead of just survive, based on the teachings of that camper-van lady. Go from nihilistic desperation to the struggle to thrive and do better. SFX I own a stack of Walking Dead hardbacks, and used to love the TV show, but maybe it’s time to put a bullet in its brain? Failing that, please will someone put one in Negan’s noggin?
