LOST IN SPACE: THE ART OF JUAN ORTIZ
Family portraits
RELEASED 7 AUGUST 122 pages | Hardback Author Juan Ortiz Publisher Titan Books
Turns out that graphic designer Juan Ortiz really is a sucker for TV franchises born in the ’60s. Even after creating movie-style posters for every episode of both Star Trek: The Original Series and The Next Generation (that’s more than 250 pieces of artwork), he’s still got enough inspiration left to apply the same treatment to all three seasons of Lost In Space.
While the Robinson family’s interstellar exploits are nowhere near as beloved or universally familiar as those of Kirk, Spock, Picard and co, the artwork here is vibrant enough to make sure that doesn’t really matter. There are still plenty of the Saul Bass-style retro designs that made Ortiz’s name but – much as he introduced a more ’80s/’90s aesthetic to the TNG book – he also includes a more playful style that borders on cartooniness, and feels totally right for the comparatively light-hearted show.
Our favourites include the comic book-style covers for “Collision Of Planets” and “Revolt Of The Androids”, and a fun set of designs introducing each of the lead characters. Together they make the show look rather more exciting than it actually was.
Ortiz has also pondered designs for fellow Irwin Allen shows Land Of The Giants and Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea.
