HOLLYWOOD DOWN UNDER

how Dark City put Fox’s australian operation on the movie map

-

located slap-bang next to the sydney cricket ground, Fox studios australia has become the biggest film-making facility in the southern hemisphere. although its reputation is built on the Matrix movies and the Star Wars prequels, it was Dark City that first demonstrated what the place was capable of. with alex Proyas committed to building as much of his demented world as possible, the sound stages didn’t so much resemble sets as living, breathing locales. as kiefer sutherland remembers, “i walked on the sets daily and gasped. it was like old hollywood where, if you made a film about ancient egypt, you had to build your own pyramids first.”
