Black lightning
Lightning’s about to strike twice…
After a successful debut season, showrunner salim akil says Black
Lightning will return fully socio-politically engaged as jefferson pierce (Cress williams) tackles the drug and gang problems in freeland.
“we’ll see the continuation of the green light effect, which is a metaphor for crack and how it invaded the black community,” akil tells SFX. “it’s also a metaphor for the opioid addiction for the white community… with that, we want to give a nod to the comic books, so the first four episodes will be under the banner of ‘the Book of Consequences’. we’re going to deal with the aspect of the children being in the pods and the experimentation in the community.”
he continues, “we also want to address that one of the biggest stereotypes is that all white people are rich and doing great. we intend to show that’s not the case because that stereotype not only hurts the country, but it hurts white folk and black people, because it gives you the idea that there are some people who are supreme and not experiencing the same thing as you. what opioid addiction has done has equalled the cultural playing field. the same type of people have put the same type of things in the same type of poor communities. so we want to build a bridge [with Black
Lightning]. Because if we keep pretending like we don’t have more s*** in common than differences, then we are going to continue to be exploited as americans.” TB
