IRON FIST
TIME TO GIVE DANNY RAND A SECOND CHANCE…
The first season of Iron Fist was received with a considerable lack of audience enthusiasm compared to its Marvel netflix cousins. so the second season drops this autumn packing a heap of changes that are meant to reinvigorate the character in the eyes of the fanbase.
first, there’s a new showrunner in raven Metzner, a self-proclaimed fanboy of the Iron Fist comics. “i love the character,” he tells SFX. “and i was excited to tell an iron fist story that i wanted to tell. and Marvel gave me the opportunity to tell the story i always wanted to tell.”
Detailing the other changes introduced, Metzner says, “for season two, we took a holistic approach to make the show. We wanted it to be on the streets of new York, so in that way, the world of the show is different. it’s a big sea change. We’re not in the rand Corporation, we’re in the streets. it’s interesting and new.
“We also evolve the action,” he continues. “We brought in this amazing stunt coordinator, Clayton Barber. and all of our cast really went for it. finn Jones (Danny rand) went to a place where he had months of lead time for the season to really hone his skills in fighting and stunt work. But it’s not just that. We dug deeper into characters and deeper into relationships, so i’m really proud of the dramatic side of the show as well. there’s the action, and the superhero element, but also these rich, grounded characters.”
as an example, Metzner cites the dynamic between Danny and Davos (sacha Dhawan). “if you’re going to tell a story about Danny and Davos in the present day, you want to balance that with showing what their relationship was in the past in K’un-Lun.” Metzner says the series will go there, but clarifies that, “the way we chose to do it is very different than in season one.”
Luke Cage’s Misty Knight (simone Missick) will also spend some time on Iron Fist, setting up a long-teased Daughters of the Dragon team-up with Colleen Wing (Jessica henwick). “having Misty Knight with us keeps the connection alive,” Metzner says of the show’s connection to the other Marvel tV universe shows. “there are moments we refer to the other shows so we’re firmly in the timeline.” TB
