Set in the aftermath of the Christchurch earthquake, this YA horror adapts New Zealand author Margaret Mahy’s acclaimed 1984 novel. It’s not bad, either, with a sinister feel and a splendid performance from Erana James as Laura, who must save her little brother from a spell. Timothy Spall is truly disturbing as the creature who wants to eat his soul, and while Laura’s brooding love interest seems to have wandered in from a Twilight movie, the rest of the cast are stellar. Creepy and satisfying.
