As intrepid highlander Jamie McCrimmon in Doctor Who, Frazer hines kept Patrick Troughton’s Time Lord company across time and space, and remains a much-loved touchstone of classic Who. we caught up with him at Bournemouth Film & Comic-Con.
Would you like to appear in the TV show again if you had the chance?
Oh I’d love to. The last Peter Capaldi story, I’d love to have gone in there. I met him in Cardiff, I watched him shoot a scene, and at the end he said, “If it wasn’t for this guy here and his Doctor, we wouldn’t be here working today,” and they all gave me a round of applause. That’s the kind of guy Peter is, lovely man.
Was there anything unfinished about Jamie’s story?
People say, “Ah, but your memory was wiped”, but at the end of “The War Games” the Time Lord says to Patrick [Troughton], “They won’t forget you; they’ll remember their first ever adventure with you.” My first adventure was “The Highlanders”, and at the end I walked into this big blue box. So yeah, I’d love to go back.
Did you pick up any souvenirs from the show?
I did – I got a Yeti! Every time I’ve moved house my mother said, “Why do you carry all that stuff with you?”, and I binned it one day. Now, that Yeti’s worth £6-7,000!
What would it say on Jamie’s tombstone?
It would have to be “Creag an tuirc!” SWr
