We Sold our SoulS

Satanism and heavy metal go together like cheese and crackers, so a horror story where a metal band appears to be a front for some devilish dealings is both a no-brainer and also not very original. Fortunately Grady Hendrix is one of the most interesting horror writers around and has imbued a generic premise with heart, thrills and squirmy terror.

We Sold Our Souls’ lead character, forty-something musician burn-out Kris Pulaski, was once guitarist in metal band Dürt Würk, until a half-remembered night which split the group irreparably. Now former frontman Terry is an inexplicably huge star and planning an enormous tour for his new band Koffin. Kris knows she has to confront him about that strange night, and the only way to do that is by getting the band back together one last time...

Hendrix has always written women well and Kris is no exception, a scrappy misfit on a crazy road trip which comes with a palpable sense of rising panic as she journeys toward the festival from hell. We Sold Our Souls doesn’t have the flair and originality of Hendrix’s ingenious Horrorstör, nor the sweetness and emotion of My Best Friend’s Exorcism, but it’s still a compelling romp with a great central character that’ll be a treat for music obsessives of all kinds.
