The anime influences that dictated the look of Resistance...
When it came to designing the look and feel of the show, all three EPs were agreed on the direction they should take.
“We talked a lot about anime,” says Auman. “When I first flew up to Lucasfilm to meet Dave [Filoni], we immediately hit it off and just starting nerding out about Robotech – that was a huge influence on the show.” Ridge agrees. “Robotech and
Macross especially were the touchstones. On Rebels, Dave looked to things like Lord Of The Rings, which he’s a huge fan of. Here it was a few live-action movies, but mostly classic anime. It was a huge influence on us.”
Another influence came from the real world – the aerial combat that characterised World War II. George Lucas was inspired by dogfighting movies – famously cutting in black and white footage while making assembly cuts of the original movie. For Filoni, however, there was a more personal resonance.
“Star Wars Resistance came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots,” Filoni stated when the show was first announced. “My grandfather was a pilot and my uncle flew and restored planes, so that’s been a big influence on me. There’s a long history of high-speed racing in
Star Wars, and I think we’ve captured that sense of excitement.”
