BAD MANORS

Four more country house horrors

-

THE INNOCENTS

This 1961 take on The Turn Of The Screw – the tale of a governess who fears her young charges are being possessed – makes atmospheric use of Sheffield Park, an 18th century mansion near Haywards Heath.

THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE

Richard Matheson’s novel Hell House is set in Maine, but the 1973 film relocates its haunted mansion – previously owned by a perverted millionaire – to England. Wykehurst Park in West Sussex was used for exteriors.

THE LEGACY

In this 1978 shocker, an American interior designer hired by a dying man discovers that (spoilers!) he’s a Satanist and she’s the heir to his mansion (actually Loseley Park, a Tudor manor house near Guildford), after five other guests all meet a horrific end.

THE OTHERS

A mother and her kids discover that (spoilers!) rather being haunted, they’re the ghosts themselves in this 2001 chiller. Though set in Jersey, the exteriors are actually Los Hornillos Palace in Cantabria, built for a Spanish duke at the end of the 19th century!
