COLLECTABLES

Things we’ve been playing with this month

-

No, it shouldn’t be spelled collectibles. Shut up. You’re completely wrong.

1

“I’m Adam, prince of Eternia and defender of the secrets of Castle Grayskull. Fabulous powers would have been revealed to me the day I held aloft my magic sword and said ‘By the power of Grayskull’, but I was too busy laughing like a fool with my eyes inexplicably jammed shut, so I didn’t notice – I’m afraid it’s the curse that befalls being a Funko Vynl He-Man figure (FPI price £19.99 for the pair). As for Cringer my, ahem, fearless friend… he’s really closer to Snagglepuss than Battle Cat, you know. Heavens to Murgatroyd!”

This Gizmo keyring (RRP £2.99) smacks of missed opportunites. We held this rubbery Mogwai simulcra in sunlight and it did not turn to dust. We got it wet and it did not multiply. And when we tried feeding it after midnight, it most certainly did not turn into a Gremlin. What’s the point?! So until Warner Bros can be bothered to license more accurate representations of their cute furry creatures, we’re going to have to pass. (Seriously though guys, Mogwai merch that changes in water – you’d be mad not to. Cheques in the post, please.)

3

These two Harry Potter character wands (FPI price £27.99 each) are just part of an extensive range from The Noble Collection. Above is Sirius Black’s wand, featuring circular designs and rune-like engravings on its handle. Below is Harry’s rather more rustic holly wand. Both come with a collector’s box and a little clip with a name tag on that you can slide them through for presentation purposes. You can choose wands from more than 20 characters. Just be careful you don’t have someone’s eye out while wafting them around, eh?

You don’t have to say anything, we know what you’re thinking. You too have always harboured the desire to don a small skirt and fight crime by moonlight. We say follow your dreams, though if you need a boost of confidence first, these Sailor

Moon shot glasses (RRP price £11.99) should do the trick. The four feature different characters from the anime, such as the dapper Tuxedo Mask and cat couple Luna and Artemis. Have a tipple and get out before Queen Beryl tries to take over the world.

One of Funko’s more

obscure efforts, this Green Hornet Pop! vinyl figure

(FPI price £6.99) – part of their Specialty Series – riffs on the newspaper publisher/masked vigilante as he appeared in the short-lived 1966 TV series. Sadly, if you want a Kato to keep him company you’ll have to buy a tin of black Humbrol and a Bruce Lee

Enter The Dragon figure, and paint a chauffeur’s outfit onto it.

6

We’ll say one thing for the

Thirteenth Doctor’s sonic

screwdriver (FPI price £14.99): it’s certainly ergonomic. We can’t stop picking it up, in fact. It fits so satisfyingly in our hands that we almost forget it looks as if it recently emerged from the Terminator’s sphincter. This replica lights up like a treat when activated and comes complete with sound effect of that trusty diagnostic whirr. Ideal for waving in front of locked doors and hurrying your narrative along.

7

Hang on, is Jodie Whittaker’s coat actually light blue, not some sort of creamy grey, like it looked in the publicity photos? And is her top really black, not dark blue? (Spoiler: turns out it has long white sleeves too.) Setting such cosplayer-panicking quibbles aside, we’re loving this Thirteenth Doctor 10” figure

(FPI price £19.99), which comes with a little sonic screwdriver accessory – the likeness is pretty decent. It’s a shame her little braces don’t twang, though. Bah.
