BOND AND BEYOND
THE FLEMING COLLECTION
Once the 007 influence is looked for, trademark elements of the stylish spy are everywhere in Chitty; from wacky contraptions and gadget cars, to the remarkably Bondsounding name of Truly Scrumptious. The most obvious character connection, however, is rooted in the film’s villainy: Baron Bomburst is none other than the titular character of 1964’s
Goldfinger, played with pantomime relish by Gert Fröbe. Anna Quayle, the doting, child-fearing baroness of Vulgaria, had also appeared in (non-Eon entry) Casino Royale the previous year. Desmond Llewelyn, a long-time Q, cameos in the junkyard scene.
