WHAT We do in The SHADOWS
Season 1 | US FX, TBC | UK BBC, TBC
While most might be familiar with
What We Do in the Shadows as a mockumentary film from Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi (above), its history actually dates back 15 years earlier to the vampire comedy stand-up routines the duo did in New Zealand. Now, it’s evolved again into a FX TV series, written by Clement, Waititi and showrunner Paul Simms.
Set in present-day Staten Island, this iteration has four different vampires (three guys and a gal) living as roommates navigating their modern undead existence. Simms admits initially he was a bit bummed that the film vamps were not appearing but adds, “The cast we found is so great. Matt Berry (Laszlo), I’ve loved in so many things. Kayvan Novak (Nandor) and Natasia Demetriou (Nadja) are great. It’s an incredibly funny cast playing characters who know what modern society is but, as Jemaine says, are like your parents who don’t know how to operate electronics. They need guidance. Like [in an episode] they’ll venture into Manhattan for the first time to meet the Manhattan vampires, who are a bit cooler than them.”
