What do you get if you cross Death Race 2000 with Wacky Races, then throw in some weird creatures? Something like this eight-part series. It’s set in a post-viral outbreak near-future where a totalitarian government has imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew because of what comes out at night... It’s a UK people are desperate to escape – desperate enough to take part in an illegal London-to-Scotland road race which offers a chance of freedom. Switch’s Phoebe Fox and Black Mirror’s Malachi Kirby head a cast which includes a host of familiar faces – among them Billy Zane (“gonzo cowboy” Joker Jones), Sean Bean (gangster The General), Adrian Lester (as an ordinary dad), and Miranda Richardson. All are pitted against one another in pimped-out vehicles like a monster truck, an armoured ambulance and a Ken Kesey-esque Volkswagen Camper van. Judging by the footage we’ve seen – and a trip to the studios in Manchester – it should be goofy, uproarious fun.
