MARA

Sleep paralysis is a ripe area for a horror film to explore, but Mara is only a partial success. A troubled psychologist (Olga Kurylenko) investigates an apparent murder, only to find herself targeted by a demon that kills people in their sleep. It’s creatively shot and Kurylenko stands out in a generally good cast, but the scares are extremely rote and prone to cliché (spooky CCTV footage lost its bite a long time ago…). This isn’t a bad film, but as a horror, it’s more than a little bland.
