As ever, there were loads more books that we couldn’t fit in. The latest Star Trek: Discovery novel, Una McCormack’s THE WAY TO THE STARS (10 January, Pocket Books), sees the 16-year-old Tilly “embarking upon the adventure of a lifetime” – and no doubt swearing like a trooper. Fans of Christopher Paolini’s dragon-bonded Eragon Shadeslayer will be pleased to hear there’s a new collection set in the world of the Inheritance Cycle. THE FORK, THE WITCH AND THE STORM (out now, Penguin) features three original stories set in Alagaësia. Hang on, isn’t that a cream you rub on a rash? Terry Goodkind’s The Nicci Chronicles also continues; third book SIEGE OF STONE (out now, Head Of Zeus) sees sorceress Nicci and her chums besieged after half a million warriors are released from centuries of stasis. Yikes. And Katherine Arden’s Winternight trilogy – a fairytale saga set in a chilly medieval Russia – concludes with THE WINTER OF THE WITCH (10 January, Del Rey). We gave book one, The Bear And The Nightingale, , calling it “beautifully written and richly textured”. Finally, media tie-ins which shine a light on female characters are all the rage nowadays (and quite right too!) First came Doctor Who book The Women Who Lived and Star Wars title Women Of The Galaxy; now FEARLESS AND FANTASTIC (out now, DK) presents bios and colourful artwork of Marvel heroines like Wasp, Peggy Carter and SquirrelGirl.
