The Ed Zone
Happy new year! And what better way to kickstart 2019 than the eagerly anticipated return of a show that boldly went where no Star Trek series had gone before? Discovery had me hooked from the start because it took the key building blocks of the saga, but tackled them with the kind of shadesof-grey, serialised storytelling that’s made this the era of binge TV – Discovery may be a warped take on Gene Roddenberry’s vision, but it’s the Trek we needed.
So, we sent reviews editor Ian Berriman on an away mission to the show’s Toronto set to find out all the intel he could on season two. He delivered. As well as meeting the returning Discovery crew, he tracked down the new Captain Pike and Mr Spock – and even opened hailing frequencies to the showrunners. Set phasers to our epic 13-page Trek feature on p34.
Elsewhere in your packed SFX, we ask Robert Rodriguez about taking on Alita: Battle Angel (p64), grill M Night Shyamalan about his Unbreakable/Split sequel Glass (p70), and look ahead to hot new TV shows Roswell, New Mexico (p9), Nightflyers (p12) and
Project Blue Book (p74). We also celebrate the career of the late Stan Lee (p48), a man who’s done as much to shape the sci-fi and fantasy genres as anyone in history.
And just in case your new year resolutions included “absorb more sci-fi!”, why not subscribe to SFX to make sure you never miss an issue? Details on p26.
