GARRETT WANG

PLAYED HARRY KIM

-

As the ever-optimistic ensign, thrust into the Delta Quadrant on his first assignment, Harry Kim was breaking new ground back home…

How does it feel to be celebrating the anniversary of Voyager?

Twenty-five years, I can’t believe how fast time has flown. It’s scary! It was life-changing for me to book this role. If you think about it, I was really the only Asian-American actor, or only Asian actor, on television in the ’90s. So it was truly groundbreaking.

There were brief romances, some action scenes and some great Captain Proton moments – but did you feel other characters took centre stage?

For the most part, I was satisfied with Harry’s development. I think because Voyager had the most series regulars of any Trek show, there were fewer chances to adequately address each character. Other Trek shows had deeper character development.

So do you wish the writers had done anything differently?

There are things I wish we could’ve seen Harry go through. I wish they’d incorporated my suggestions of adding a little more humour to him. It seemed the only humour was given to The Doctor. Giving more humour to all the human characters would only have added to the show.

With Picard back, would you consider a return to Star Trek?

If you’d asked me this question a year or two after Voyager ended, I’d have said, “I have no interest whatsoever”. That chapter was over. Now, almost two decades later, I’d jump at the chance.

Any idea what form you’d like that to take?

Robbie McNeill [Lieutenant Paris] and I were at a convention and Robbie said, “What would you guys think if Garrett and I got together and filmed The Further Adventures Of Captain Proton?” They went crazy. I thought, “Well, that’s pretty good.” So yeah, I would do it.
