HOLLY RACE
MEET THE DEVELOPMENT EXECUTIVE BEHIND YA URBAN FANTASY MIDNIGHT’S TWINS
and When I first heard about the show I was highly sceptical. Fictional curses and supernatural shenanigans are totally my wheelhouse, but the idea of suggesting that actual people’s deaths were the result of “a curse” seemed pretty offensive. But it’s actually very well handled.
I watched the Poltergeist ep first. That series was beset with tragedy after Dominique Dunne, one of the stars of the original, was murdered by her boyfriend. Then Poltergeist III’s young lead Heather O’Rourke died before filming wrapped, following a medical misdiagnosis. Cursed Films is fascinating and respectful, with Poltergeist III director Gary Sherman talking about not wanting to release the film at all, having to shoot a new ending with a double, and just how incredibly sad the whole thing was.
You can’t go to the cinema, but here are a few new-ish home ent releases that are worth a look.
(pictured) is a violent Russian black comedy horror which sees a bunch of awful people try to batter each other to death in a house and frustratingly failing. A relentless but inventive exploitation flick, it’s dark but energetic throughout.
is a low-budget take on the vampire movie, in which bullied kids use the creature that’s taken shelter in their back garden to nefarious ends. Would suit fans of Super Dark Times. Finally, is a glossier affair with folk-horror leanings, in which a mysterious being causes families to forget their loved ones. It’s slick and a bit generic, but entertaining nonetheless.
