In the TV show, the Doctor’s granddaughter Susan was left behind on a future Earth shattered by a Dalek invasion. In previous Big Finish Doctor Who adventures we’ve heard how her husband and son were killed; now it’s time for Susan to head to Gallifrey and play her own part in the Time War.
The first episode of this box set, “Sphere Of Influence”, reunites Susan with teacher/companion Ian Chesterton as they head to the Sense Sphere (previously seen in
“Assets Of
War” is a darker tale of the Time Lord war efforts, as scientists attempt to manipulate the vortex-dwelling Orrovix into weapons that can track down and kill Daleks. It takes a thoughtful look at the ethics of such experimentation, as well as the Gallifreyan class system.
Final story “The Shoreditch Intervention” heads back to ’60s London in a drama that interacts with 1988’s “Remembrance Of
The Daleks” – itself a story that played around the edges of Who’s debut, “An Unearthly Child”. Paul McGann turns up as the Eighth Doctor and is confronted by Susan about his choice to stay out of the war – but it squanders its potential with a clunky and confusing script. An occasionally intriguing set, but not essential. Rhian Drinkwater
