Inside the SFX hive mind
DARREN SCOTT EDITOR RAVES
Daleks! gave me chills – what an absolute treat for a dark winter evening.
Freaky is great. Hopefully it’ll still get a UK theatrical release (though I realise I’ve tempted fate now).
RANTS
I enjoyed the remake of The Witches, but I just don’t really know why it was needed. The original is perfection.
IAN BERRIMAN DEPUTY EDITOR RAVES
Current reading: The Trials Of Koli, book two of Mike Carey’s latest series, and Canongate’s new translation of Yegveny Zamyatin’s We.
’60s strip The Daleks looks immaculate in Panini’s new reprint.
David Cronenberg’s in Star Trek: Discovery! Here’s hoping it gives him a taste for making more genre movies again…
Sorry To Bother You is now on Netflix. Watch it! One of my favourite films of 2018.
JONATHAN COATES ART EDITOR RAVES
Started reading the Tiffany Aching series to the family at Halloween and we’re completely hooked… although my Nac Mac Feegle accent is woeful, even by Christopher Lambert’s standards! We’ve also recently enjoyed Alex Bell’s Explorers series and Jenni Spangler’s The Vanishing Trick.
The Mandalorian has absolutely reignited my love for Star Wars and given me hope for the likes of the Obi-wan series.
And speaking of Ewan Mcgregor, think he’d make a great replacement Grindelwald.
ED RICKETTS PRODUCTION EDITOR RAVES
Ian’s review of Dementia last issue led me to seek it out, and it is astonishing for a film made in 1953. If you like David Lynch, buy it now.
RANTS
What on earth is going on with the once-brilliant Ben Wheatley? First the pointless Rebecca remake and now, er, The Meg 2… Does he need the cash?
NICK SETCHFIELD EDITOR-AT-LARGE RAVES
Currently enjoying George Lucas: A Life by Brian Jay Jones, which makes the story of Star Wars seem fresh and vital again.
I had fun guesting on episode nine of the Robby The Robot’s Waiting podcast, chatting about Connery, Bond and the glory that is Moonraker. Mix yourself a Vesper and have a listen: anchor.fm/robbyscifi.
TARA BENNETT US EDITOR RAVES
Wolfwalkers is a delightful, original animated folk tale featuring lush, gorgeous 2D animation. An all-round pleaser.
RANTS
As a fan of both Lego and Star Wars, I can’t believe how disappointingly The Lego Star Wars Holiday Special turned out. Lumpy feels like high art now.
