Captain’s Log

-

Two new Dalek adventures on TV in the same month? Russell T Davies has returned to Doctor Who? What’s going on? You’ll just have to indulge me, I’m afraid, as I explore an alternate universe – hey, everyone loves a multiverse now, right? – and feature his new drama It’s A Sin in these hallowed pages. Yes, we had access to some glorious behind the scenes images and yes, I got to chat to the man himself (he’s got a shiny new microphone, so there’s no stopping him now), and no, I know it’s not “proper” sci-fi.

Covid is the second devastating pandemic that I, and many people I know, have lived through, though for a great number it will be the first that’s really only affected them directly. So it would be remiss of me, I feel, not to pay homage to It’s A Sin, a Channel 4 drama about HIV and AIDS in the 1980s. It stars Olly Alexander as a jobbing actor – who appears in an episode of Doctor Who, which gives me a perfect “in”.

Hopefully, if you turn up for the Daleks you’ll also enjoy a story of life and living – and celebrate some of the wonderful creatives we’ve lost along the way. I’ve a lot to be grateful to Russell for over the years, and this remarkable piece of television is just one more thing to add to the list.

That’s just one small thing that’s brought to you with much love this issue – look at that gorgeous Star Wars feature, with another equally gorgeous cover by Lee Binding! The tip of an altogether less intimidating iceberg, I’m sure you’ll agree. Enjoy, be kind, stay safe and I’ll see you back here in four weeks.
